Gospel: Matthew 10:7-15
Friends, in today’s Gospel Jesus said to His Apostles: “As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts; no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The laborer deserves his keep… Then, as you enter a house, wish it peace…
“Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give”
Yesterday, we’ve reflected on the authority which the Lord gave to His apostles (that is the authority of healing, raising the dead, and driving out demons). And this authority was received by the apostles without cost, which is why in today’s Gospel, Jesus invites them to give this also without cost. This is so inspiring to reflect because the Lord is teaching us true generosity and love. To be a generous person is to give without holding grudges. To be a generous person is to give heartfully for the good of others without counting costs. This means to give what is beyond normal giving. True generosity, therefore, is giving all-in-all without waiting for any return. And this reminds us of St. Paul saying, “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Another important point which the Lord teaches in today Gospel is true love. True love serves (This means serving other people without looking others as burden); True love hurts (this means serving even giving up of one’s career, time, sweat and blood, for others particularly the needy. And lastly; True love is inclusive. This means everyone is included no matter who you are, what you’ve become.
Friends, give! Love! Don’t hesitate! Feel free! In serving and loving others, we are understanding more of who we are. We are knowing more ourselves. We are knowing more our God – who is love.
Abba, without cost You gave us Your Son for our Salvation. May we who received Him become salvation also toward our brothers and sisters, without cost. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ Your Son who lives with You in unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.
