Gospel: Matthew 16:13-23

Friends, in today’s Gospel Peter confidently answer Jesus’ question about His identity; who is He to them? Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Upon hearing this, Jesus praised and blessed Peter for it is not flesh and blood who revealed this to him but the Heavenly Father. And Jesus further said, “you are Peter and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Then, Jesus strictly ordered His disciples not to tell anyone that He is the Christ.

Peter was able to answer Jesus confidently for he had a close or deep relationship with the Lord. He knew Jesus from the beginning of their ministry. He works with wonder in Jesus’ name, and he was given an opportunity and authority to spread the Good News of the Kingdom by healing the sick, raising the dead, cleansing the lepers, and driving out demons. Peter was able to live out Christs’ missionary works. And because of these, he was convinced and believe that this person whom he is following is no other than the Messiah, the Savior of the world.

The statement of which Peter uttered confidently, “You are the Christ” indicates a personal and strong relationship with Jesus. No one can say to a person who he really is deeply, without knowing him/her profoundly. It is the same when you are saying “I love You” to someone you knew well. Because of this confession of Peter, he was given a task by the Lord to take care of the “Keys” of the Kingdom. Whatever he will bind on earth will also be bound in heaven and whatever he will lose on earth will lose also in heaven. This means that whatever Peter will do for the glory of God, it will always be known and remembered. This includes of course the forgiveness of sins which God entrusted to him.

As the rock from whom the Church of Jesus will be built upon, he was given a task by Jesus to strengthen the faith of his brothers and sisters. And this is what Peter did during his journey as leader of the apostles and of the church (Pope). He feed, and tend Jesus’ lambs and sheep. Now, we are here and we continue being fed by Pope Francis the successor of St. Peter.

Like Peter, may we have confidence in answering Jesus’ question: who do you say that I am? May we strengthen our relationship with the Lord. May we also become and instrument or channel of God’s love and grace towards others, particularly those people who need shepherding.

Abba, thank You for revealing to Peter the identity of Jesus. May we who believe in Him also strengthen our relationship with Him by doing Your will in our life and always be faithful to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Your Son who lives with You in unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.
