Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord

Gospel: Mark 9:2-10
Friends, in today’s Gospel Jesus was transfigured before the apostles Peter, James, and John in a high mountain. Jesus’ clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. In the sight appeared also Elijah and Moses conversing with Jesus. When Peter conversed with Jesus, a cloud came, casting a shadow over them, and in the cloud, a voice came saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
The transfiguration of Jesus is a glory of God that shines not from somewhere but from Jesus himself. It reveals God’s glory and plans for our humanity: that we are destined to be resplendent in glory. We will be clothed in glory by the Lord. And to be clothed in glory means sharing in the life of God. We become God’s children and He is our Abba.
The experience of the apostles was just a foretaste of the glory of God, that is to be revealed in time. Yet, those times that they were there with Jesus, and a shadow cast over them was already an experience of God’s glory. They already participated in the divinity and glory of the Lord. The shadow was to show and revealed that Jesus is the light, the center of everything, and He must be heard. Moreover, there was a voice coming from the clouds saying, “This is my beloved Son, Listen to Him!” And so, one should listen not to all others, but to Jesus only. The disappearance of Moses and Elijah after conversing with Jesus was proof that we should prioritize God, that we should listen to God.
Friends, God is telling us in our gospel to be aware of Him and must listen to Him always. We must recognize God’s wonders, blessings, and love every day. If we have done something wrong we must come back to Him and return back to Him. God wants everyone to share in His glory. He desires that all will enjoy His goodness and glory. And by sharing in His glory, we may be able to spread the light, particularly to our brothers and sisters who need most of our help.
Prayer
Abba, Father thank You for Jesus’ transfiguration. May we follow Him and obey His commandments be transformed also to a new life in Christ. Grant this to our Lord Jesus Christ Your Son who lives with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.
